Burro is a Series B robotics company deploying 700+ autonomous ground vehicles in agricultural settings (vineyards, nurseries, berry farms) to address labor shortages. The company's robots function as computer vision-based autonomous vehicles for carrying, towing, and scouting, with a roadmap toward fully autonomous outdoor work.
You will lead the Robot Applications and Behavior team (currently 5 engineers, growing) responsible for the behavior stack, state machines, mission sequencing, robot-to-cloud backend communication, operator UI, and the overall user experience of interacting with Burro robots. This team integrates capabilities from Autonomy, Perception, and SLAM teams into customer-facing behaviors and features.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and growing a team of 5+ engineers
- Owning the behavior stack and state machines that sequence robot missions
- Leading integration efforts to deploy new behaviors from simulation to field robots
- Designing the backend communication layer between robots and cloud infrastructure
- Building and refining the operator UI and human-robot interaction experience
- Driving on-device AI/ML initiatives, including edge-deployed voice models that enable workers to command robots via natural language without network connectivity
- Partnering closely with Hardware, Product, Field Operations, and peer engineering directors (Platform/Integration, SLAM, Perception)
This is a hands-on director role: you will manage the team while remaining deeply involved in technical execution and code. The ideal candidate has shipped scalable software on real robots or autonomous vehicles, has prior experience managing engineers, and is committed to engineering excellence. The role is based in Philadelphia with an office in central California.
