1X is building general-purpose humanoid robots (NEO) designed to operate safely alongside humans. The company is now shipping its flagship product and scaling operations. This role owns the 1X Developer Platform end-to-end—a comprehensive platform that enables external developers to build apps, integrations, and fine-tuned world models for 1X robots. Unlike typical low-level SDKs, this platform includes an app store with safety, security, and privacy verification.
As Director of Product, you will own platform product strategy and deliver a clear, prioritized roadmap that balances customer needs against hard engineering constraints. You inherit technical debt and in-development APIs while managing competing priorities across the entire software engineering organization. Your charter is to drive measurable gains in customer confidence and adoption, ensuring customers succeed on the platform rather than working around it.
Key responsibilities include: owning platform product strategy and roadmap; driving customer adoption metrics; working closely with partnerships to understand both commercial and consumer customers; leading API improvements while customers actively depend on the product; simplifying complex technology into intuitive experiences; building and mentoring the product management team; and maintaining focus across competing priorities without escalating to executives.
You will translate complex technical systems into simple, delightful product experiences. You must set strategy grounded in customer outcomes, hold a prioritized roadmap against constant pressure, and make technical tradeoffs legible to both customers and engineers. Strong written communication is essential—documentation and product communication drive decisions across the large engineering organization.
Minimum qualifications: 10+ years in product management with platform ownership experience; proven track record building developer or infrastructure platforms for external customers; demonstrated ability to lead and develop product managers (as Group PM, Director, or pod lead); experience improving APIs with active customer dependencies; ability to set and defend prioritized roadmaps grounded in customer outcomes.
Preferred: engineering or design background; experience shipping integrated hardware-software products; SMB product experience; early-stage company building experience.
Compensation: $225,000–$275,000 annually. Benefits include comprehensive medical/dental/vision, generous PTO and parental leave, 401(k) match, FSA/HSA, commuter benefits, disability/life insurance, and EAP.
