Replit is seeking a Director of Product Design to lead the day-to-day operations of its Product Design organization. This is a player-coach role reporting to the Co-Founder & Head of Design, combining hands-on product design work with team leadership and development.
You will manage and mentor a team of product designers while remaining deeply embedded in active design work. Responsibilities include leading design operations, ensuring alignment and delivery to high standards, managing and developing designer talent, shaping the customer journey, and working alongside designers on complex product challenges. You'll stay informed across initiatives to surface context and insights for leadership decision-making, raise design quality through feedback and craft, evolve design practices and culture, and recruit exceptional design talent as the organization scales.
The role requires balancing people leadership with meaningful hands-on contribution. You'll whiteboard with designers, navigate complex product decisions, provide thoughtful feedback, and partner closely with Product and Engineering on technically sophisticated products.
Required experience includes leading product design teams in high-growth tech companies, proven ability to balance leadership with hands-on design, a strong portfolio demonstrating craft and systems thinking, close partnership with Product and Engineering, success in fast-moving environments, exceptional communication and coaching skills, strong design taste, and experience simplifying complex technical products.
Nice-to-have qualifications include experience with developer tools, AI-powered products, coding experience, growing design teams in startups, and active use of AI in design processes.
This is a full-time role based in Foster City, CA with an in-office requirement of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
