Salary: USD 140,000 - 200,000 / annual
Icarus is building solar-powered aircraft that operate at 60,000 feet for weeks at a time, establishing persistent presence in the stratosphere. As Director of Facilities, you will own every aspect of the company's physical infrastructure, from daily operations to long-term expansion. Your primary mission is to build and maintain an environment where engineers can focus entirely on aircraft development.
Key responsibilities include:
- End-to-end ownership of facilities operations and long-term expansion planning
- Leading factory buildouts, renovations, and infrastructure projects
- Designing factory layouts that optimize engineering and manufacturing velocity
- Managing equipment moves, machine installations, and production area expansions
- Owning critical utilities: electrical, HVAC, compressed air, networking, and related infrastructure
- Managing contractors, vendors, construction projects, permits, and inspections
- Developing long-term facility roadmaps as the company scales into new buildings and manufacturing capabilities
- Overseeing physical security, badge access, maintenance programs, and site reliability
- Ensuring facilities are safe, organized, and ready to support testing and production
- Identifying and removing physical bottlenecks that slow engineering, technical, and manufacturing teams
You will work closely with the CEO and cross-functional leaders in engineering, manufacturing, flight operations, and business operations. At Icarus, facilities is not treated as a support function—the factory itself is considered one of the company's most important products. Every wall, machine, utility, and workbench should directly enhance team velocity.
Ideal candidates have experience leading facilities, factory infrastructure, or manufacturing expansion at hardware-focused companies. Aerospace, automotive, robotics, or advanced manufacturing background is highly valued. Experience at companies like SpaceX, Tesla, Anduril, Rivian, or Amazon Robotics is particularly relevant. You should be comfortable managing multiple simultaneous projects in a fast-moving environment, have strong project and vendor management skills, and demonstrate extreme ownership and self-direction.
