Strava is a global community platform for active people with over 200 million athletes across 185+ countries. As Director of Engineering for Trust & Safety, you will lead the engineering strategy and team responsible for keeping Strava's community safe and compliant.
You own the systems that detect and moderate harmful content, manage age assurances, and handle regulatory reporting. This is a high-impact role where you'll drive technology strategy for core services, often leveraging AI/ML approaches. You'll partner closely with Policy, Legal, Product, Design, and Operations teams while owning the engineering roadmap, team management, and delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a team of engineers and guiding their career development
- Partnering with AI/ML teams to set technical strategy for LLM-based auto-moderation systems
- Identifying and driving technology investments that build a durable trust and safety foundation
- Collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver critical priorities
- Building an inclusive, high-accountability team culture
- Managing multiple engineering teams, including managers and staff+ engineers
You bring 5+ years of Trust & Safety experience and 5+ years of management experience (including 2+ years managing managers). You have hands-on fluency with AI/ML approaches to content moderation, full-stack systems engineering expertise (10+ years), and a track record delivering trust and safety initiatives for consumer-facing applications with user-generated content. You excel at balancing short-term deliverables with long-term technology investment and stay current with AI technology best practices.
Strava is backed by Sequoia Capital, TCV, Madrone Partners, and Jackson Square Ventures. The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid requirement of at least 3 days per week in office.
