BILL is hiring a Director of Design to lead the visual identity and creative output across all brand touchpoints—campaigns, web experiences, videos, events, templates, and more. You will report to the VP of Marketing and collaborate with leaders across Brand, Web, Partner Marketing, Customer Marketing, Demand Gen, and Product Design.
This is a leadership role focused on people, process, and partnerships. You will lead an in-house multidisciplinary design team (brand, campaign, motion, and graphic design), work with agency partners, and maintain hands-on involvement in concepting, art direction, and execution when needed.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and grow the design team, set quality standards, run design critiques, and build a culture of continuous improvement
- Set the creative vision for BILL's brand and drive it across all marketing and product channels to differentiate in the market
- Integrate AI tools into the team's workflow—deciding which tools to adopt, establishing guardrails, and redesigning intake, briefing, and review processes to increase output without proportional headcount growth
- Build video production into a weekly capability with a structured pipeline and review process, determining what work is staffed in-house, contracted, or sent to agencies
- Own the brand design system: standards, templates, and governance that Marketing, agencies, and internal teams use while maintaining quality under production pressure
- Manage the team end-to-end like an agency: intake, prioritization, capacity planning across disciplines, weekly prioritization forums, budget management, contractor oversight, and agency relationships from RFP to delivery
- Partner with Brand on positioning, Web on site and conversion testing, and Product Design on brand consistency from first ad to first login
- Write briefs for major work, present to senior leadership, and communicate the team's business impact
- Hire, develop, and retain top design talent
What you bring:
- 10+ years in design, with at least 4 years leading a multidisciplinary in-house creative team, including managing Creative Directors or other people managers
- Portfolio demonstrating both your own work and work created by teams under your direction, with strong brand and campaign work showing a clear point of view
- Experience building and maintaining a brand design system in a fast-moving company
- Hands-on experience integrating AI tools into creative workflows, with informed opinions on where they add value, where they fall short, and how to protect quality
- Experience producing or building teams/vendor relationships for video and motion marketing
- Experience managing agencies, contractors, and budgets from RFP through delivery
- Ability to present design strategy to C-level stakeholders, make the business case for creative quality with data, and confidently say no to work that doesn't meet standards
- Craft proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, motion/video tools (After Effects, Premiere), and AI-assisted workflows—enough to evaluate and elevate team work and contribute hands-on when needed
- Bonus: experience leading design through brand transformations, shaping visual expression of AI features in fintech products, partnering with web/growth teams on redesigns and conversion testing, or working in regulated industries
Success metrics include BILL's brand becoming distinctive and modern across all channels with market recognition, the design team shipping more work faster with AI integrated into workflows while maintaining or improving craft quality, video becoming a standing capability with a pipeline and body of work (social ads, product explainers, launch films), cross-functional partners viewing the team as an enabler rather than a bottleneck, and building an innovative, growing team where people want to work.
