Cohere is seeking a Design Engineer to own and evolve Waypoint, the company's design system, across both Figma and production code. This is a dual-fluency role requiring genuine expertise on both the design and engineering sides—you'll move fluidly between defining component behavior in Figma and shipping those same components to npm.
You will take direct ownership of the Figma library (structure, variants, tokens, documentation) while contributing to core Waypoint systems: component packages, token pipelines, and tooling that keeps design and code synchronized. The role goes beyond maintaining today's system; you'll help shape how Waypoint evolves to serve a third audience—AI models that will increasingly build with the design system directly.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning and evolving the Figma library to serve as a reliable source of truth for design teams
- Building and maintaining core Waypoint components in production packages
- Managing the token pipeline to keep design tokens in Figma tightly synced with code representations (CSS custom properties, Tailwind config)
- Partnering with product designers and engineers to translate patterns into system components
- Defining and refining workflows and tooling that connect Figma and code (sync scripts, plugins, documentation sites)
- Writing clear documentation and usage guidance to scale the system
- Weighing in on system architecture decisions (component granularity, versioning, consistency)
- Shaping how Waypoint evolves to be legible to AI systems, not just humans

Qualifications:
- Genuine fluency in both design (Figma) and engineering (component development, npm packages)
- Experience building or contributing to design-to-code sync tooling (Figma plugins, token pipelines, MCP-based workflows)
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and component-level implementation
- Experience packaging and versioning component libraries for multiple teams (npm scoped packages, semver, changelogs)
- Exposure to multi-platform design systems (iOS/SwiftUI, Android/Jetpack Compose, or token build tools like Style Dictionary)
- Interest in or experience with AI-native product environments and how AI changes design system architecture
- Ability to balance unglamorous foundational work with forward-looking system design
