Berkshire Grey is seeking a Director of Hardware Engineering to lead the development and execution of hardware systems powering next-generation warehouse automation and robotic solutions. This is a hands-on leadership role managing a small team of 4-5 hardware engineers, responsible for guiding multidisciplinary engineering efforts across electromechanical systems development, validation, and commercialization.
Key responsibilities include leading and mentoring the hardware engineering team while promoting engineering best practices and technical excellence. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including product management, software leadership, and quality assurance to ensure seamless integration between hardware, software, controls, and robotics systems. The role encompasses design verification, validation, qualification, and product release activities, with accountability for compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and product safety certifications.
You will establish development schedules, resource plans, and project milestones while identifying and mitigating technical risks. The position requires driving predictable execution while balancing scope, schedule, cost, and quality. You'll partner with Operations and Supply Chain to ensure Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) standards are met, support manufacturing scale-up and continuous improvement initiatives, and lead engineering support for production issues and field reliability improvements.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or related discipline, with 12+ years of progressive engineering experience developing complex electromechanical products. You must have 5+ years leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, proven experience leading products through production at scale, and demonstrated success working with manufacturing partners and supply chains. Excellent communication and executive presentation skills are essential.
Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in Engineering or MBA, experience with autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotic picking systems, warehouse automation, or industrial robotics, knowledge of ISO, CE, UL, OSHA, and other safety standards, and experience with PLM, ERP, and engineering change management systems.
