Chainalysis is seeking a Director of Engineering & Business Systems to lead a transformation of the company's internal business systems and platform engineering organization. This role sits at the intersection of technical leadership and organizational development, overseeing the shift from traditional IT/admin-centric operations to a modern, AI-driven platform and data engineering function.
You will own the integrated technical roadmap for business systems architecture, enterprise data platforms, and integrations across the organization. This includes direct management of systems and engineering-track managers and individual contributors spanning platform engineering, data engineering, integration engineering, and systems administration. You'll establish engineering standards, practices, and operating models that leverage AI and agentic processes, while building succession depth across a multi-manager organization.
Key responsibilities include: leading the technical architecture and delivery roadmap for business systems and enterprise data; directly managing and mentoring engineering managers and technical staff; collaborating with Product, Success, and Program Management to translate business requirements into technical scope and sequencing; serving as the internal technical authority for vendor and partner reviews; owning the security, RBAC, and data-governance posture of platforms; and partnering with engineering leaders across Chainalysis to leverage existing platforms and best practices.
Required qualifications: 8+ years in software, platform, or data engineering with 4+ years managing engineers and engineering managers. Strong organizational leadership with demonstrated ability to hire, develop career paths, and build succession depth. Comfortable in ambiguous, transformation-in-progress environments. Proven ownership of team-based technical architecture and engineering practices (repo management, CI/CD, code review standards, testing discipline). Experience managing technically mixed teams (engineers, data engineers, systems administrators) and raising the technical bar of admin-facing work. Data-first orientation with strong fluency in modern, event-based, service-oriented architectures using Node.js/TypeScript in serverless AWS environments. Deep experience with REST/GraphQL APIs, authorization strategies (OAuth, JWT), data engineering fundamentals (SQL, Python, dbt, pipeline orchestration, ETLs, medallion architectures), and IaC platforms like Terraform.
Nice-to-have: modern AI-centric engineering workflows, Model Context Protocol (MCP) and autonomous AI agents, graph theory and databases for AI co-pilots, vendor and implementation partner management, enterprise SaaS platforms (Salesforce, NetSuite, Marketo) at architectural/API level.
The company emphasizes AI fluency as a core competency and expects all employees to develop AI capabilities independently, bring ideas, and collaborate on reinventing how work gets done.
