Gusto is seeking an AI-native Design Systems Product Designer to join the Builder Enablement team, responsible for Workbench—Gusto's internal design system used across the organization. This is a Staff/Principal-level role at the intersection of rigorous design systems craft and AI-assisted workflows. You'll evolve and maintain Workbench during a pivotal moment: mid-Brand Refresh, actively building AI tooling to improve how designers and engineers interact with the system, and expanding how the design system serves both LLMs and AI-assisted products alongside human designers. The role requires deep systems thinking, strong component and token expertise, and genuine fluency with AI tools as a core part of your workflow—not an afterthought. Day-to-day responsibilities include: - Design and maintain Workbench components and patterns, including complex components with variables, variants, and tokenized styles - Own and evolve semantic and functional token architecture through the Brand Refresh and toward theming - Partner closely with engineering to ensure component consistency, including coded implementations, design pairing, code review, and contributing PRs - Contribute to AI tooling that helps designers and engineers use Workbench correctly—structured documentation, Storybook examples, and LLM-legible content - Support product designers and engineers through Office Hours, Slack, and async review - Document and publish design decisions, usage guidance, and component rationale - Participate in systemic decisions about component architecture, naming conventions, and migration strategy The Builder Enablement team is small and tight-knit, embedded within Gusto's 70+ person design organization. The team's mission is to make high-quality, AI-assisted shipping the default for every builder at Gusto. You'll work across component design, documentation, token architecture, AI tooling (MCP servers, prompt engineering, eval systems), and supporting the broader design and engineering org. Gusto handles payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
