Build is an AI company creating an agentic AI stack for institutional real estate, automating complex development and acquisitions workflows. The company partners with major alternative asset investors, developers, and governments to accelerate built-world projects from concept to completion. This Design Lead role owns the complete design system across brand, product, and deliverables—with no separation between marketing and product. You will sit at the center of the company, working directly with the CEO, engineering, and domain experts with no intermediary layers. You will not receive pre-defined requirements; instead, you will decide what should exist, design how it works, and either build it or direct engineering to execute your vision. The role spans both brand identity work (positioning, visual systems, typography, creative direction for campaigns and motion) and complex product design (client-facing platforms, internal tools, information-dense interfaces for high-stakes professional decisions). You will design the deliverables themselves—the models and recommendations that clients present to investment committees—which represent the highest-leverage design surface in the company. You will establish and maintain a unified design system that makes a deliverable, a deck, and a screen recognizably the same company. Key responsibilities include: - Updating Build's positioning and brand as the company expands into new asset classes and services - Evolving the brand through creative direction and visual artifacts (campaigns, film, motion, print, environment) - Refining brand voice and designing trust into every layer from brand through product - Designing the client-facing platform, assistant, and work commissioning/delivery workflows - Designing internal tools where interface quality is the throughput constraint - Building a unified design system across all touchpoints - Exploring and inventing new artifact types not yet seen in the category - Directing contractors and raising the standard of everyone who touches the work - Working end-to-end: prototyping, testing, and directing engineering Requirements: - Genuine range across brand and product design; you refuse to accept that identity systems and working interfaces are different jobs - Proficiency in both design and engineering; you can code and write pull requests - Serious information and editorial design ability; your outputs are consequential documents requiring craft, typography, and restraint - Strong spatial and systems thinking; you see how pieces relate before being asked - Experience designing for high-stakes decisions where users are accountable for acting on your work - Taste you can argue for; strong opinions mean nothing without the ability to bring engineers and domain experts with you - Comfort with ambiguity; this role has no playbook yet - Growth mindset; you understand that design compounds distribution and want to scale Background profiles the company welcomes include: brand or editorial studio experience with identity system rigor and product proximity; product design roles where design was the differentiator on complex, information-dense software; or founding/founder experience where you wore multiple hats.
