Writer is an enterprise generative AI platform that helps leading companies like Mars, Marriott, Uber, and Vanguard build and deploy AI agents grounded in their company data. The company is valued at $1.9B and backed by top-tier investors including Premji Invest, Radical Ventures, and ICONIQ Growth.
As a Design Engineer, you will own the Writer Design System (WDS)—its architecture, maintenance, and evolution for both human users and AI agents. This role sits at the critical intersection of design and engineering, ensuring that the core UI library is complete, consistent, and trustworthy enough to support production code generation by AI agents at scale. You'll work closely with designers, product managers, and engineers across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the Writer Design System end-to-end: building, maintaining, and optimizing it for both humans and AI agents
- Designing and shipping production-quality UI components and features from sketch to production
- Delivering design-led work that enhances product feel—polish passes, micro-interactions, and brand moments
- Architecting new primitives and extending core components while maintaining documentation across Figma, markdown, and Storybook
- Setting and upholding standards for front-end craft: accessibility, motion, consistency, and quality
- Researching and implementing design-to-code workflows to unlock org-wide productivity
- Partnering across teams to measure WDS adoption, close gaps, and ensure shipped features meet design system standards
This is a hybrid role based in one of Writer's hubs: San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, New York City, Seattle, or London. You will report to the Director of Product Design. Writer is open to hiring at multiple levels with compensation scaled to experience and scope.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4–8+ years building production frontends with TypeScript and React, with a track record of owning a system, platform, or surface end-to-end (not just individual features)
- Solid understanding of animation principles: easing curves, choreography, anticipation, follow-through, interruptibility, and perceived performance
- Expert-level Figma proficiency (auto-layout, variants, variables, code connect) and proficiency with design engineering technologies like framer-motion, gsap, and lottie
- Demonstrable obsession with craft, evidenced by portfolio, side projects, GitHub, or production work that includes systems-level work
- Experience driving adoption of a design system or shared platform across an engineering organization, with a track record of influencing technical or design direction beyond your immediate team
- Experience with AI product surfaces: tool-call UIs, streaming responses, agent state, and dynamic UI rendering; comfort navigating ambiguous, cross-team problems
- Genuine commitment to Writer's values of Connect, Challenge, and Own
