As a Design Engineer, you'll own the Writer Design System (WDS)—its architecture, maintenance, and usage by both human designers and AI coding agents. This role sits at the intersection of design and engineering, with particular urgency as AI agents increasingly write production code. Your work ensures the design system is complete, consistent, and trustworthy enough to scale across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the Writer Design System end-to-end: design, build, maintain, and optimize for both human and AI agent usage
- Design and ship production-quality UI components from sketch to production, including polish passes and micro-interactions
- Architect new primitives and extend core components while maintaining documentation across Figma, markdown, and Storybook
- Uphold standards for accessibility, motion, consistency, and front-end craft across all design system work
- Research and implement design-to-code workflows and tools to unlock org-wide productivity
- Partner with designers, PMs, and engineering leads to measure adoption, close gaps, and ensure shipped features meet design system standards
- Help shape how the EPD (Engineering, Product, Design) organization ships product
This is a hybrid role based in one of WRITER's hubs: San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, New York City, Seattle, or London. You'll report to the Director of Product Design.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4–8+ years building production frontends with TypeScript and React, with a track record of owning a system, platform, or surface end-to-end (not just individual features)
- Solid understanding of animation principles: easing curves, choreography, anticipation, follow-through, interruptibility, and perceived performance
- Expert-level Figma proficiency including auto-layout, variants, variables, and code connect
- Proficiency with design engineering animation libraries: framer-motion, gsap, lottie for web
- Demonstrable obsession with craft, evidenced by portfolio, side projects, GitHub, or production work that includes systems-level work
- Experience driving adoption of a design system or shared platform across an engineering organization, with a track record of influencing technical or design direction beyond your immediate team
- Experience with AI product surfaces: tool-call UIs, streaming responses, agent state, and dynamic UI rendering
- Comfort navigating ambiguous, cross-team problems with good judgment
