Salary: USD 150,000 - 300,000 / annual
Eagle is an AI laboratory backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners that acquires and transforms civil, structural, and MEP engineering firms with applied AI. The company's mission is to radically transform how we design and construct the built environment by closing the gap between what is theoretically automatable (85% of engineering work) and what has actually been touched by AI (less than 5%).
As a Design Engineer, you will work directly with the CTO to own how AI intelligence becomes something engineers actually trust and use. You will be responsible for making non-deterministic, agentic systems legible to people who have never worked with a software company before. You'll have a front-row seat to building a company from zero, engaging with product strategy, firm acquisitions, and architecture decisions on a problem domain barely touched by AI.
Key responsibilities include:
- Embedding with staff at engineering firms alongside founders to observe how they work, then designing and building solutions based on those insights
- Owning the product surface end-to-end, from interaction design and prototyping through shipping production front-end code yourself
- Establishing and maintaining a design system with components, patterns, and primitives that remain coherent as products compound across acquisitions
- Defining interaction patterns for an AI-native platform, including streaming and latency handling, human-in-the-loop review, provenance and citations, and making agent behavior transparent enough to trust
- Collaborating directly with the CTO on product direction, culture, and future builds
You will not hand off design work to others—you ship it yourself in production. You are comfortable with the unique challenges of AI-native products: non-determinism, streaming output, uncertainty, agentic flows, and earning user trust in machine output. You have deep curiosity about how things work—organizations, workflows, markets—and are willing to expose your ignorance and constantly ask why. You possess the poise and communication skills to earn trust with people who've never worked with a tech company before. You can synthesize noisy, conflicting user feedback into clear opinions about what to build. You're willing to travel and are not above any task: drawing icon sets, writing components, sitting beside users to watch them interact, or wiring up off-the-shelf tools to test ideas quickly.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong design taste and engineering chops to ship production code yourself (React/TypeScript or equivalent)
- Proven track record building and maintaining a design system that multiple products or teams depended on
- Real experience designing UX for AI-native products
- Deep curiosity for how things work
- Excellent communication and poise to earn trust with non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to synthesize conflicting feedback into clear product opinions
- Willingness to travel and be hands-on across all tasks
