Caravelo builds the technology platform behind airline subscription products, combining SaaS, payments, booking systems and airline integrations. The Professional Services team implements this platform for each airline customer, and this role bridges the gap between the common platform and the unique needs of each airline.
As a Customer Solutions Engineer, you will:
**Bring customers live**: Work with Project Managers and customer stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into concrete implementations. You will configure and extend the Caravelo platform, build customer-specific plugins containing business logic and integrations, and take implementations through development, testing, launch and production stabilisation. Your job is to understand the platform deeply enough to use it intelligently and extend it where necessary, rather than rebuilding what already exists.
**Solve integration problems**: Airlines have complex technology ecosystems mixing modern and legacy systems. You will integrate Caravelo with reservation systems, payment gateways, identity platforms, CRM systems, loyalty platforms, data platforms, internal APIs and third-party systems. You should enjoy figuring out problems when API documentation is incomplete, behaviour differs between environments, or systems have fundamentally different assumptions.
**Build customer-specific extensions**: When the common platform has genuine gaps, you may build additional connectors, extend workflows, create customer-specific business logic, develop isolated services or modules, or implement data transformation and migration processes. The challenge is knowing when to configure, when to extend and when to build something new.
**Own implementations beyond go-live**: Customer systems evolve and integrations need to move with them. You will investigate and debug production issues, maintain customer-specific integrations, upgrade connectors as external systems evolve, support technical migrations, and improve implementations as better platform capabilities become available. These are real production systems with real customers and travellers behind them.
**Work across the stack when needed**: Your centre of gravity is Java and backend engineering, but you should be comfortable following features or problems wherever they go: backend services, APIs, integrations, databases, scripts, data migrations or occasional frontend changes in Vue. You do not need to be a frontend specialist, but you need to be comfortable enough to understand problems, use AI-assisted development effectively and validate production quality.
**Use AI as an engineering tool**: The company actively uses AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor and Devin for implementation, exploring unfamiliar code, writing tests, debugging, refactoring, documentation, working with APIs and accelerating occasional frontend work. The company is particularly interested in Spec-Driven Development: defining clearly what needs to be built before asking AI to help implement it.
You are succeeding when you can take customer requirements and turn them into clean, production-ready solutions; customers launch without unnecessary core platform changes; customer-specific behaviour remains well isolated and maintainable; integrations are observable, reliable and understandable; you can diagnose complex problems across systems; you understand when to configure, extend or build custom solutions; you become increasingly independent in understanding new customer technology landscapes; and migrations can be delivered without destabilising customer services.
Technologies you may encounter include Java, SpringBoot, Vue.js, Nuxt, Couchbase, PostgreSQL, AWS, Datadog, Gitlab, Docker, Opentofu, Claude Code and Cursor. More important than matching every technology is your ability to understand unfamiliar systems, investigate how things work and build reliable solutions.
The role is a good fit if you like engineering problems where the answer is not always obvious, enjoy understanding how systems behave rather than just implementing predefined tickets, are comfortable opening documentation for unfamiliar APIs, talking through requirements, tracing production issues across systems and writing solutions. You appreciate good architecture but are pragmatic, and when confronted with legacy systems that behave differently from documentation, your reaction is closer to "interesting" than "that's someone else's problem".
**Requirements:**
Must have:
- Strong professional experience building production software in Java with solid backend engineering fundamentals
- Experience designing and integrating APIs, distributed services and cloud-based systems
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, especially when working across multiple systems or external dependencies
- Good understanding of testing, CI/CD, databases, observability and production software quality
- Comfortable understanding an existing platform and extending it cleanly rather than rebuilding from scratch
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with Project Managers, engineers and technical customer stakeholders
Nice to have:
- Experience in Professional Services, implementation engineering, solutions engineering or customer-facing technical delivery
- Experience integrating enterprise or legacy systems, particularly in complex customer environments
- Experience with payments, payment gateways, data migrations or other business-critical integrations
- Experience in travel technology, airlines, reservation systems or similarly integration-heavy industries
- Familiarity with Vue/Nuxt, Couchbase or Datadog
- Experience working in security, compliance or reliability-sensitive environments
