Convex is a backend platform designed to empower developers to build fast, reliable, and dynamic applications without needing a dedicated backend team. The company provides a full-stack app platform with database, compute, and backend abstractions that enable developers and LLMs to move quickly while creating scalable, maintainable products.
As Creative Director / Head of Design, you will own the creative identity and visual language of Convex across all touchpoints—brand, product design, marketing, events, and the website. This is a strategic role that requires ruthless prioritization and the conviction to maintain a coherent creative vision across a broad surface area.
You will set the creative strategy for how Convex presents itself to its developer audience, ensuring the brand is distinct, thoughtful, playful, and honest. Developers can instantly spot inauthenticity, so the work demands both strategic thinking and authentic execution.
Initially, this is a hands-on role where you'll do the work yourself in Figma and in the codebase, working directly with founders on brand and product strategy. You'll work alongside existing creative freelancers and set the bar for taste across everything. As Convex grows, you'll build a small, world-class creative team to scale your vision.
Key responsibilities include: setting creative strategy and prioritization; owning the Convex brand identity across all touchpoints; executing design work directly; maintaining high standards for taste and craft; filtering out marketing inauthenticity; and building a small creative team over time.
The ideal candidate has a portfolio demonstrating range across brand systems and product design, calibrated taste for technical and skeptical audiences, the ability to set direction while also executing the work, strong judgment for prioritization, experience building or leading small creative teams, and genuine interest in working in-person in San Francisco. You should understand developers deeply, value simplicity, and bring constructive energy to a fast-moving startup environment.
