Alt is building a modern marketplace for alternative assets, starting with trading cards ($5B+ market). The company has raised over $100M from top-tier investors including Stripe and Coinbase founders, and backed by athletes like Tom Brady and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Alt enables collectors to buy, sell, vault, and finance cards on a single platform.
You will be hired as the first Controller to build and own Alt's accounting function end-to-end. Currently, finance is a one-person team supported by an outsourced accounting provider. Your mandate is to bring this function in-house, establish proper controls and policies, and scale the team as the business grows.
Key responsibilities include: owning the monthly close and driving it toward a 5-day, fully reconciled, audit-ready process; leading the conversion from mixed cash/accrual to full US GAAP accrual accounting across all revenue streams (auctions, fixed-price exchange, lending, partner revenue); owning the chart of accounts and revenue recognition policy; automating revenue postings by integrating the data warehouse (Snowflake) with QuickBooks or a future ERP; serving as primary contact for external auditors; managing the tax compliance calendar (corporate returns, K-1s, state/local filings, 1099s, R&D credits); owning covenant and borrowing-base reporting for the asset-backed credit facility; and managing day-to-day accounting operations (AP/AR, reconciliations, fixed assets, spend controls, vendor administration).
You bring 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with hands-on controllership. You have deep US GAAP knowledge and direct experience converting companies from cash or mixed-basis to full accrual accounting. You've owned external audit relationships, managed PBC lists, walkthroughs, and auditor communication. You have experience in marketplace, fintech, or lending environments, comfortable with principal-vs-agent revenue questions and reserve/receivable accounting. You're fluent with QuickBooks, modern spend platforms (Ramp), HRIS systems (Rippling), and have SQL/BI comfort to tie GL entries to source data, ideally with experience running integrations between data warehouses and accounting systems. You've managed outsourced, fractional, or offshore accounting teams. Nice-to-haves include asset-backed lending experience, covenant/borrowing-base reporting, and preparation of companies for institutional fundraising or M&A diligence.
This is a build-from-scratch role where you'll write policies, checklists, and controls from the ground up, with a clear path to leading a growing team. You'll report directly to the Head of Finance.
