Anthropic is scaling compute infrastructure internationally and seeks a Compute Country Lead to own the end-to-end strategy and execution of compute buildout in Japan. This is a high-trust, high-ambiguity leadership role responsible for bringing gigawatts of compute online in the country.
You will serve as the single point of accountability for Anthropic's compute footprint in Japan, coordinating cross-functional workstreams including site selection, leasing, energy procurement, financing, government relations, policy, community engagement, construction, and operations. While specialist functions are managed centrally by functional leads in San Francisco, you will provide in-country leadership, coordination, and accountability across all workstreams.
Key responsibilities include: owning the end-to-end strategy from site selection through operations; serving as primary accountability owner for leasing, financing, energy, government relations, community engagement, construction, and operations; providing working leadership to the in-country cross-functional team; representing Anthropic with government officials, utilities, energy providers, and external stakeholders; building relationships within Japanese government and energy industry; tracking progress and surfacing risks as the compute footprint scales; and translating between global Anthropic priorities and Japan-specific regulatory, political, and market conditions.
You will lead and coordinate cross-functional teams without direct line authority, requiring strong structured thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. This role demands comfort with ambiguity, hyper-organization, and the ability to drive structure into undefined situations while managing multiple concurrent workstreams.
Required qualifications include Japanese nationality with established government and energy industry connections (strongly preferred), structured thinking with ability to learn new domains quickly, excellent communication skills for senior stakeholder engagement, demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams without direct authority, meticulous organization and detail orientation, comfort with ambiguity, and background in energy, infrastructure, or related sectors. Nice-to-have experience includes large-scale infrastructure or datacenter development, existing relationships with Japanese government bodies relevant to energy or industrial development, capital-intensive project management, and familiarity with compute, cloud, or datacenter industries.
