Mesh is a crypto payments infrastructure company backed by leading investors including SBI, Money Forward, Paradigm, Dragonfly, Galaxy, and PayPal Ventures. The company's mission is to enable consumers to pay and be paid with any asset, bridging the gap between tokenized assets and everyday commerce.
You will be Mesh's first dedicated Compliance Officer for its Japan entity, building the compliance function from the ground up. This is a foundational role where you will design, implement, and maintain Mesh Japan's compliance program, including AML/CFT, KYC, and Travel Rule obligations. You will serve as the primary point of contact for all regulatory engagement and licensing-related workstreams in Japan, working closely with outside counsel and Mesh's global compliance team.
Key responsibilities include: designing and building policies and procedures tailored to a crypto payments infrastructure business operating under Japanese regulation (not adapted from generic templates); serving as the main liaison with regulators, partners, and internal stakeholders on compliance matters; tracking regulatory developments in Japan's digital-asset and payments space and advising leadership; partnering with global compliance, legal, and risk teams to maintain alignment; supporting partner and client onboarding and due diligence; and preparing compliance reporting for the board and regulators.
You will need 5+ years of compliance, regulatory affairs, or legal experience in financial services, payments, or crypto/digital assets in Japan. Strong working knowledge of Japan's regulatory framework for payments and/or crypto businesses is essential, along with direct experience working with or reporting to the FSA or comparable regulators. Experience with financial license applications with Regional Finance Bureaus and the FSA is required. Business-level fluency in both Japanese and English is necessary, with native Japanese speaker preferred. You should be comfortable building a function from the ground up with limited initial resources, with high attention to detail and strong written communication skills for policy and regulatory documents.
The role can start as full-time or fractional engagement depending on the right candidate. Mesh operates with hybrid expectations in its major hubs (San Francisco, New York, Bangalore at 40% in-office), though specific expectations for the Tokyo role will be discussed during interviews.
