Salary: USD 150,000 - 250,000 / annual
Inertia is building a compliance function to support the commercialization of fusion energy technology. This role leads the development of export controls and trade compliance programs, with expansion into broader regulatory compliance as the company scales.
You will own Inertia's trade compliance and export control program, translating requirements under the EAR, ITAR, CUI, 10 CFR Part 810, and DOE/NNSA regulations into practical guidance for controlled technologies, software, technical data, and collaborative research. Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement trade compliance and export control programs from the ground up
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations and contractual requirements governing CRADAs, SPPs, government-funded programs, and national laboratory partnerships
- Advise teams on export classifications, licensing requirements, technology controls, deemed exports, and compliance considerations
- Create processes for managing controlled technical information and access by U.S. and non-U.S. persons
- Conduct export jurisdiction and classification analyses, including ECCN determinations
- Partner with Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Talent, IT, Security, and leadership to integrate compliance into business processes
- Support compliance for government-funded programs and national laboratory partnerships
- Advise on trade compliance within contracts, supplier relationships, technology transfers, and international activities
- Conduct risk assessments, internal reviews, training, and investigations
- Monitor regulatory changes and translate them into organizational guidance
- Build scalable processes that support growth without creating execution barriers
You bring 10+ years of export controls, trade compliance, or related regulatory experience. You have deep knowledge of EAR, ITAR, and export classification processes. You can independently analyze complex export control questions and provide practical guidance to technical and business teams. You've worked in highly technical, regulated environments (aerospace, defense, energy, nuclear, advanced manufacturing, or national laboratories). You excel at translating complex regulations into clear processes for non-legal stakeholders. You operate independently, identify risks proactively, and build programs with limited existing infrastructure. You're comfortable in startup environments where responsibilities evolve.
Bonus experience includes DOE, NNSA, national laboratory, nuclear energy, or fusion energy ecosystem work; government contracts and DFARS familiarity; legal experience in commercial contracts, corporate matters, or government contracting; or experience scaling trade compliance programs in startups.
