Anthropic is seeking a Community Engagement Manager to serve as the on-the-ground presence in communities where the company's data centers are sited, built, and operated across New York State. This is a relationship-focused role that bridges Anthropic's Policy and Infrastructure teams with local officials, community organizations, economic development partners, and residents.
You will be responsible for building and maintaining trusted relationships with town, village, city, and county elected officials and administrators, planning and zoning boards, local industrial development agencies, state agencies, economic development organizations, community groups, civic leaders, labor and building trades organizations, educational institutions, and workforce partners. You will develop and execute community engagement strategies for each market, spanning site selection, pre-development, construction, and ongoing operations.
Key responsibilities include building external coalitions, hosting education and listening sessions, designing local solutions that deliver real benefits to communities, representing Anthropic in public forums and town halls, monitoring community sentiment and local political dynamics, and advising internal teams on risks and opportunities. You will partner with Real Estate and Infrastructure teams to incorporate community input into project planning and delivery, work with Communications on locally relevant messaging, coordinate charitable giving and community investment commitments, and partner with the Energy and Sustainability team on environmental stewardship questions.
As Anthropic's infrastructure footprint is still in early growth stages, you will help write the playbook—the processes you build in your first markets will scale as the company expands. You will travel regularly across New York State, including upstate communities, up to 50% of the time, and occasionally to other Anthropic data center markets.
ANTHROPIC CONTEXT: Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, focused on creating reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The company is building AI infrastructure at significant scale and seeks to be a trusted, long-term partner to the communities where it operates.

- Skilled relationship and coalition builder who earns trust with diverse stakeholders and maintains relationships through difficult conversations
- Ability to represent a company credibly in public settings, including town halls, hearings, and press interviews
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to turn complex operational plans into plain language for local officials and reporters
- Ability to work independently, get up to speed quickly on complex policy issues, and manage multiple concurrent engagements across different markets
- Based in New York or willing to relocate there, and prepared to travel regularly across the region
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
- A field of study relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Preferred qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in community engagement specifically on data center, utility, energy, or large-scale industrial infrastructure projects, or in local government
- Familiarity with land use, zoning, and permitting processes at the local and regional level in New York, including environmental review under the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and local incentive approvals through industrial development agencies
- Experience managing corporate social responsibility programs
- Established relationships with economic development, workforce, labor, or civic organizations in the markets this role covers
- Experience working with real estate, legal, communications, and policy teams simultaneously
- Experience engaging with Native nations in New York, including familiarity with consultation processes and Tribal sovereignty
- A genuine interest in the communities where you work, not just the projects you are managing
