Anthropic is seeking a Community Engagement Manager to serve as the on-the-ground presence in Montana and Utah for its data center operations. This is a relationship-focused role, not primarily communications or government affairs, though it encompasses elements of both. You will be the connective tissue between Anthropic's Policy and Infrastructure teams and local officials, community organizations, economic development partners, and residents. Your core mission is to make Anthropic a trusted, visible, and valued neighbor from site selection through construction and long-term operations. You will surface concerns before they escalate, translate technical and operational plans into clear local benefits, and build coalitions that enable rapid and responsible expansion. Key responsibilities include: - Building and maintaining trusted relationships with county commissioners, mayors, city and town councils, planning and zoning bodies, state economic development agencies, community groups, civic leaders, educational institutions, and workforce partners - Engaging respectfully and meaningfully with Tribal governments and Native communities, recognizing Tribal sovereignty and supporting consultation and partnership efforts - Developing and executing community engagement strategies for each market across site selection, pre-development, construction, and operations phases - Building external coalitions, hosting education and listening sessions, and designing local solutions that deliver real community benefits - Representing Anthropic in public forums, town halls, planning hearings, community events, and local media - Monitoring community sentiment and local political dynamics, advising internal teams on risks, opportunities, and engagement pace - Partnering with Real Estate and Infrastructure teams to integrate community input into project planning and delivery - Coordinating with Communications on locally relevant messaging - Managing charitable giving, community investment, and economic development commitments, including nonprofit partner relationships - Partnering with Energy and Sustainability teams to explain environmental stewardship, address power and water questions, and discuss water rights and rural utility partnerships - Building scalable community engagement playbooks and repeatable processes as Anthropic's infrastructure footprint grows You will travel regularly within Montana and Utah (up to 50% of the time, often over long distances) and occasionally to other Anthropic data center markets. Minimum Qualifications: - Experience in community affairs, public affairs, economic development, government relations, local or state government, or closely related field - Direct experience working for or engaging with county and municipal governments and diverse community stakeholders on large infrastructure, construction, energy, or technology projects, with working understanding of local politics and community dynamics - Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders and navigate difficult conversations - Ability to represent a company credibly in public settings including town halls, hearings, and press interviews - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to translate complex operational plans into plain language for local officials and reporters - Ability to work independently, get up to speed quickly on complex policy issues, and manage multiple concurrent engagements across different markets - Based in Montana or Utah or willing to relocate, prepared to travel regularly including long drives across both states Preferred Qualifications: - 7+ years of experience in community engagement on data center, utility, energy, or large-scale industrial infrastructure projects, or in local government - Familiarity with land use, zoning, and permitting processes at county and municipal level in Montana and/or Utah, and with water rights and water use questions in the Mountain West - Experience managing corporate social responsibility programs - Established relationships with economic development, workforce, or civic organizations in the covered markets - Experience working with real estate, legal, communications, and policy teams simultaneously - Experience working with Tribal governments and Native communities in Montana or Utah, including familiarity with consultation processes, Tribal sovereignty, treaty considerations, or community benefit agreements - Genuine interest in the communities where you work, not just the projects you manage
