Wafer is building AI infrastructure software that optimizes energy and cost efficiency for AI workloads, serving trillions of tokens monthly for mission-critical applications at fast-growing AI companies.
We are seeking a Chief of Staff to work directly with the CEO and accelerate company operations. This is an unusually broad role designed to own high-priority work that would otherwise fall through the cracks across the organization.
Your responsibilities will span company operations, customer relationships, recruiting, finance, strategy, legal, and special projects. One week you might coordinate an important customer visit, build a financial model, and negotiate a vendor contract. The next you might manage office logistics, run a recruiting process, prepare for an investor meeting, or help resolve a strategic question. You will take ambiguous problems from the CEO and drive them from rough idea to completed outcome.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drive ambiguous problems from rough idea to completion
- Ensure important company priorities don't fall through the cracks across teams
- Manage critical customer relationships: coordinate dinners, meetings, visits, follow-ups, and special events while keeping founders directly involved
- Own company operations that don't yet justify dedicated functions (office operations, vendors, logistics, travel, contracts, special projects)
- Support recruiting for high-priority searches and closing exceptional candidates
- Handle legal and administrative workflows alongside outside counsel
- Translate technical context from engineering into clear communication for customers, candidates, investors, and partners
- Identify recurring bottlenecks and either fix them, build lightweight systems, or help hire permanent owners
- Execute whatever is most important for Wafer each week
This is not a coordinator role. You will operate independently, exercise judgment, and drive things to completion. The role requires five days per week in-person at the San Francisco office.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Extremely high agency; instinct to figure things out rather than wait for instructions
- Unusually organized and detail-oriented; things don't disappear when handed to you
- Excellent judgment about when to decide independently versus pull others in
- Comfortable switching between very different kinds of work in the same day
- Scrappy problem-solver who uses minimum necessary process
- Excellent communicator who can represent Wafer well with customers, candidates, investors, and partners
- Sufficient technical curiosity and fluency to understand an AI infrastructure company and learn quickly from engineers
- Discreet and trustworthy with sensitive company information
- Low ego; comfortable with both operational tasks (booking restaurants) and strategic work (financing decisions)
- Experience operating in fast-moving, early-stage, or extremely demanding environments
- Learns very quickly and executes an unreasonable amount of work
