Blacksmith is a high-growth infrastructure company that has built a platform to run CI workloads at massive scale. Operating tens of millions of Firecracker VMs weekly for 5,000+ companies, the company has achieved ~$50M ARR in 2.5 years and raised $58.5M from top-tier investors including Google Ventures and Peak XV Partners. The founding team brings deep systems expertise from Faire and Cockroach Labs, with GTM leadership from Zapier's former Head of Sales.
As the first in-house Brand Designer, you will own Blacksmith's visual and verbal identity across all surfaces—website, product interfaces, social media, events, presentations, and swag. This is not a blank-slate role; you'll inherit a thoughtfully-built brand foundation established with an ongoing brand advisor and take ownership of its evolution.
Key responsibilities include translating complex technical infrastructure concepts into compelling visuals that resonate with and build credibility among engineers. You'll develop a flexible, scalable visual system that adapts across multiple product lines rather than static guidelines. Working directly with founders and engineering teams, you'll shape launch narratives and create assets for high-visibility channels like Hacker News, X, and the company blog. You'll ship rapidly, iterate in public, and treat brand as a living system that evolves with the product. You'll also raise the bar on design craft across the team while maintaining quality at speed.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of brand design experience, ideally in developer tools, infrastructure, or complex B2B products. You need a portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and range across web, motion, print, and presentations, with strong typography and layout fundamentals. You should have proven experience building or meaningfully evolving a brand for a technical product—not just executing an existing system. You're maniacal about polish, instinctively understand what earns developer trust, and can articulate design decisions to engineers and founders. You're comfortable with ambiguity, love prototyping multiple options, and are skilled at leveraging agentic tools to accelerate iteration.
