Catawiki is a curated online marketplace for special objects, auctioning over 75,000 items weekly to 10+ million monthly visitors. The Engineering team builds best-in-class products across search, discovery, bidding, curation, logistics, payments, and support. As a Backend Engineer, you'll join one of three autonomous product verticals—Demand, Supply, or Fulfilment—working in a small, collaborative Agile team to design, develop, and maintain scalable microservices. You'll own the full lifecycle of your team's services: design, development, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement. Key responsibilities include: - Building end-to-end scalable microservices and features with a focus on high availability, low latency, and consistency - Taking ownership of service quality, resilience, and maintainability throughout their lifecycle - Collaborating across product, design, frontend, backend, and mobile teams to deliver product innovations - Identifying opportunities to improve engineering processes and advocating for development best practices - Fixing bugs, refactoring code, and raising overall product quality - Participating in Technical Week—a bi-sprint innovation and knowledge-sharing initiative You bring 7+ years of software development experience with strong object-oriented programming foundations, plus 3+ years working on customer-facing products in e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS. You have expertise designing and deploying backend services, understand API design and relational databases (SQL), and communicate clearly in English. While the stack is primarily Ruby, prior Ruby experience is not required if you're eager to learn. You're solution-oriented, collaborative, and passionate about customer needs.
