Join Xero's Security Defence team as an Associate Security Engineer, where you'll help design, build, and continuously improve detection, investigation, and response capabilities for security threats. Working alongside Security Operations, Security Response, Engineering, Product, and Legal teams, you'll translate threat intelligence and security requirements into practical, reliable controls that protect Xero and its customers.
You'll develop your engineering skills through hands-on delivery, pair programming, incident participation, and mentorship from experienced engineers. The Security Defence team operates at the heart of threat detection and response, leveraging SIEM, SOAR, EDR, and cloud security tooling to protect the platform and customer data.
Initially, you'll focus on monitoring, investigating, and responding to security alerts and suspected incidents with guidance from senior team members. You'll contribute to detection, monitoring, enrichment, and response workflows across security platforms. Key responsibilities include building and improving detection content, integrations, dashboards, and alerting; developing runbooks, playbooks, and automations to reduce manual effort and accelerate response times; and expanding threat-intelligence-led detection engineering and automation coverage.
The role is based in Xero's Melbourne office with a hybrid working model, offering flexibility to work from home while connecting with colleagues during designated boost days. You should have a growth mindset and genuine curiosity about security engineering, cyber security, software engineering, cloud security, or detection engineering. Comfort picking up unfamiliar codebases and applying established patterns with guidance is essential. You'll need hands-on experience with scripting, debugging, automating, or building small integrations, plus interest in using AI-assisted tools responsibly. Strong written and verbal communication, collaborative approach, and experience working in engineering, security, IT, operations, or technology teams are important.
