Courier Health is a Series B healthcare technology company on a mission to improve patient engagement for people living with chronic and rare diseases. The company builds software for life sciences and biopharma companies to support patients from diagnosis through therapy initiation and ongoing adherence. Backed by leading investors including Oak HC/FT and Norwest, Courier Health is headquartered in New York City. You will be Courier Health's first dedicated in-house legal hire, reporting directly to the CFO. This is a foundational role where you will build the legal infrastructure and processes that enable a high-growth company to operate smoothly while scaling responsibly. Key responsibilities include: • Building scalable legal infrastructure: Develop and strengthen frameworks, templates, and processes for managing commercial agreements, data processing addendums (BAAs), vendor agreements, and partnership structures. Ensure adoption across teams without creating bottlenecks. • Cross-functional partnership: Work across the organization to help navigate key business decisions. Position legal as an accelerant to decision-making, not a constraint. Provide practical, decisive counsel to leadership. • Strategic risk judgment: Serve as a trusted advisor to the CFO and executive team on legal and compliance risks. Distinguish material risks from routine matters and help leadership make confident decisions with appropriate context. • Compliance and regulatory oversight: Manage HIPAA and healthcare data privacy compliance, given Courier Health's responsibility for sensitive patient data on behalf of leading biopharma companies. Work closely with specialized outside counsel and ensure comprehensive oversight. • Legal process design: Establish how legal work flows at the company—intake, triage, turnaround expectations, escalation paths—to keep the function proactive rather than reactive. The role is based in the New York City office. The company operates office-first with an expectation of 4 days per week in-office, with flexibility as needed. REQUIREMENTS: • 8–12+ years of legal experience, ideally including meaningful in-house time at a technology or healthcare technology company • J.D. from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law in New York or another U.S. jurisdiction • Deep experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts: SaaS SOWs, MSAs, BAAs, vendor agreements, and partnership structures • Working knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare data privacy—able to spot issues, ask the right questions, and know when to escalate to specialized counsel • Comfort operating in ambiguity and making sound risk judgments without perfect information • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders at all organizational levels • Builder's mentality: preference for creating systems and processes rather than just reviewing individual documents • Track record of being trusted by cross-functional partners • Strong executive presence and comfort advising senior leadership BONUS: • Experience in life sciences, pharmaceutical, or digital health environments • Familiarity with state privacy laws (CCPA, CPRA) and evolving AI/data governance frameworks • Experience supporting fundraising rounds, equity management, or board governance • Prior experience as a company's first or sole in-house counsel
