Wave is a fintech company building financial services across Sub-Saharan Africa, with a mission to make Africa the first cashless continent. The company operates a mobile money platform with millions of users across 9 countries and is the largest financial institution in Senegal.
As Assistant Financial Controller based in Lilongwe, Malawi, you will lead the development and scaling of Wave's financial and accounting operations in the country. This is a management role overseeing the finance team while maintaining external stakeholder relationships and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Representing the Finance unit to external stakeholders, including regulators and auditors
- Reviewing and monitoring company financial transactions
- Ensuring compliance with Malawi's financial, legal, and regulatory requirements
- Maintaining accounting controls by developing and recommending policies and procedures
- Managing the external auditor relationship and ensuring adherence to accounting standards
- Recruiting, training, mentoring, and developing finance staff
- Collaborating with Product Managers to ensure new products are designed correctly from accounting and tax perspectives
- Leading by example and embedding Wave's values within your team
You will work from the Lilongwe office with occasional travel to field locations. This is a permanent position requiring work authorization in Malawi.
The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Accounting or Finance with a minimum of 8 years of experience in auditing, accounting, or finance. You must have specific experience with Malawi's financial reporting requirements and managing tax audits. Experience in an audit firm is advantageous. You should demonstrate exceptional time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills with strong interpersonal communication abilities. Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Google Sheets is required.
