Wave Mobile Money is building financial services to make Africa the first cashless continent. The company operates a mobile money platform across 9 Sub-Saharan African countries, enabling cash deposits, withdrawals, peer-to-peer payments, and business transactions without traditional banking infrastructure.
As Assistant Controller based in Niamey, you will lead the finance function during a period of rapid scaling. You'll manage a small finance team, overseeing recruitment, training, mentoring, and staff development. Your responsibilities include representing the finance unit to external stakeholders, reviewing and monitoring financial transactions, ensuring compliance with Niger's financial, legal, and regulatory requirements, and maintaining accounting controls through policy development and enforcement.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain effective financial and accounting systems as the business scales
- Monitor company financial transactions and ensure regulatory compliance
- Study existing and new legislation to advise on required actions
- Prepare and recommend accounting policies and procedures
- Manage the external auditor relationship and ensure compliance with accounting standards
- Recruit, train, mentor, and develop finance staff
- Collaborate with Product Managers to ensure new products are designed correctly from accounting and tax perspectives
- Lead by example, embedding Wave's values within your team
You'll work from Wave's Niamey office with occasional travel to field locations. Required qualifications: Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; minimum 8 years progressive experience in auditing, accounting, or corporate finance; proven experience navigating Niger's financial reporting and regulatory frameworks; track record managing statutory tax audits; full professional fluency in French and English; exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills; strong leadership and interpersonal abilities; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Prior experience at a reputable external audit firm is advantageous.
