OpenAI's AI Architect team partners with organizations to deploy AI solutions at scale. The Education vertical focuses on universities, schools, research institutions, and education systems, helping them adopt AI responsibly and strategically.
As an Applied AI Architect for Education, you will be the senior technical owner for a named portfolio of education customers, serving as the primary technical counterpart to their leadership teams. You act as the "CTO of your book of business," shaping each institution's AI strategy from pre-sales discovery through deployment, adoption, and measurable impact.
You own the technical account plan across ChatGPT Edu, the OpenAI API, and other agentic AI solutions. In partnership with Account Directors (who own commercial strategy), you own technical strategy, customer journey, and path to production value. You translate institutional priorities into focused use-case portfolios, actionable adoption roadmaps, and clear paths to durable value and growth.
You work across academic, research, administrative, and operational contexts—identifying where AI can responsibly improve teaching and learning, accelerate research, strengthen student and faculty services, and improve institutional operations. You account for education-specific realities: shared governance, complex stakeholder networks, academic calendars, accessibility, data privacy, and responsible-AI expectations.
Key responsibilities include: serving as primary technical advisor for a named customer portfolio; leading discovery with institutional executives, academic leaders, researchers, faculty, and technical teams; translating priorities into clear AI architectures; guiding institutions through technical evaluations and proofs of value; developing focused use-case portfolios; building trusted relationships across CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, provosts, deans, and faculty; coordinating support from deployment, implementation, training, product, and research teams; tracking adoption and customer outcomes; identifying repeatable patterns and architectures; translating field insights into product feedback; and identifying expansion opportunities.
The role requires strong education-sector fluency, sound architectural judgment, and the ability to move confidently between executive strategy, academic workflows, and hands-on technical conversations. You remain accountable for technical outcomes while bringing in specialists across deployment, security, product, and education programs.
