Clay is a $5B-valued, venture-backed SaaS platform that helps organizations with go-to-market data enrichment and workflow automation. The company recently raised a $100M Series C and crossed $100M in revenue, serving customers like Anthropic, Notion, Google, and Ramp.
This is a newly defined Accounting Engineer role—a hybrid discipline combining accounting operations, finance systems, and data engineering with AI at its core. You will own Clay's monthly close end-to-end, including journal entries, reconciliations, flux analysis, and reporting. You'll drive finance transformation and automation initiatives across the accounting function and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors, exploring real-time audit tooling powered by AI.
On the systems side, you'll own Clay's ERP and connected finance systems (payroll, expense, equity, billing), including integrations, data pipelines, and ongoing implementation. You'll evaluate and onboard new finance tooling, maintain system documentation, and ensure SOD controls as the stack scales.
A core part of the role is building AI-powered workflows using Claude, Cursor, and similar tools to automate reconciliations, variance analysis, and close tasks. You'll write SQL to extract and validate data across systems, systematically eliminate repetitive accounting work, and build dashboards for real-time financial visibility—with the goal of shortening the close every quarter.
You'll also partner cross-functionally with GTM, Product, and Operations on finance-adjacent projects, support FP&A with data infrastructure and modeling, and act as the accounting team's connector to the broader organization.
Required: 5+ years of accounting experience (mix of public accounting and high-growth startup exposure), hands-on operational accounting (owned a close, managed reconciliations, dealt with messy data), experience implementing or administering a finance system or ERP, SQL proficiency (querying large datasets, writing joins, debugging independently), and demonstrated use of AI tools (Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) to accelerate accounting or finance work.
Nice-to-haves: CPA license or active pursuit, familiarity with billing and revenue platforms (Stripe, CPQ, metering platforms) and their accounting integrations, and experience building or contributing to financial data models, dashboards, or BI tooling.
