Carta is seeking a Workday Payroll & HCM Manager to own the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of Workday's Payroll module for 2,000+ employees globally. This role sits within the People Systems Team and serves as the primary technical liaison between Payroll Operations and the broader People team. Key responsibilities include: • Own Payroll Configuration: Lead configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Workday Payroll module to ensure accurate, compliant calculations, earnings, deductions, and timely pay delivery across all pay cycles. • Build Scalable Integration: Design payroll configuration that integrates cleanly with Core HCM, Time Tracking, Absence Management, Compensation, and Benefits modules. Partner with HRIS and Integrations teams to ensure system coherence. • Stakeholder Relationship Management: Serve as the primary liaison between Payroll and People teams, translating business requirements into Workday configuration and owning the payroll stakeholder relationship. • Core HCM Expertise: Maintain strong working knowledge of Core HCM (organizations, business processes, staffing) to ensure Payroll decisions align with the broader HCM foundation. • Testing & Release Management: Lead payroll-impact analysis, regression testing, and validation for Workday releases and configuration changes before production deployment. • Troubleshooting & Resolution: Serve as the escalation point for payroll configuration issues, diagnosing root causes and implementing fixes in partnership with Payroll Operations. • Documentation & Governance: Maintain clear configuration documentation and governance practices to ensure payroll setup remains auditable, consistent, and transferable. Required qualifications: 6-8+ years of hands-on Workday Payroll configuration experience; strong Core HCM background (organizations, staffing, business processes); solid payroll fundamentals (earnings, deductions, tax setup, pay calculations); proven ability to partner with cross-functional stakeholders (especially HR/People teams); comfort managing configuration changes through testing and release cycles; detail-oriented with compliance-first mindset. Preferred: Time Tracking and/or Absence Management configuration experience; exposure to Workday integrations (EIB, Core Connectors).
