ButterflyMX is seeking a Vice President of Data to lead a company-wide data transformation and establish data as a core operating advantage. The company has invested in foundational technologies including Snowflake, Fivetran, dbt, Sigma, and modern AI platforms, but needs exceptional leadership to turn these systems into a trusted operating picture of the business.
The VP of Data will report directly to the CTO with four initial direct reports and broad influence across Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, Finance, Operations, and Executive Leadership. This is a highly visible role requiring an unusual combination of diplomacy and conviction—building strong partnerships across functions while challenging leaders, rejecting weak definitions, and pushing persistently for systemic change.
Key responsibilities include defining and executing enterprise data strategy; establishing Snowflake and a governed data layer as the authoritative source of truth; ensuring leaders can understand performance, diagnose problems, and act confidently; translating business questions into durable analytical systems; partnering with Finance, Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, Product, and Operations to define economic and operational relationships; identifying leading indicators and causal relationships; creating mechanisms to reveal emerging risks and opportunities; improving planning, forecasting, and resource allocation; establishing metric governance frameworks; treating data products with the same rigor as external software; building a data organization where AI agents are primary working tools; remaining technically engaged to review code, inspect models, and prototype solutions; engineering data quality into the platform; and developing strong partnerships with every major business function.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on executive who has built at scale, can challenge architecture decisions, understands the business deeply, and remains close enough to the work to inspect models, write code, and help solve difficult problems personally.
