Okta is seeking a Vice President, Associate General Counsel for Commercial Legal to lead and scale the company's global commercial legal team. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this strategic leadership role sits at the heart of Okta's go-to-market organization and legal department. You will lead a high-performing team of commercial attorneys and legal professionals, providing executive-level negotiating expertise on complex SaaS master subscription agreements, AI commercial matters, professional services agreements, reseller and distributor agreements, and enterprise commercial transactions across all customer segments including financial services, healthcare, and public sector. Key responsibilities include: developing and mentoring the commercial legal team; serving as escalation point for complex negotiations; ensuring legal services balance risk and opportunity while remaining customer-oriented; evolving legal delivery to be data-driven and efficient; positioning the team as a leader in AI agentic commercial legal approaches; building a world-class public sector commercial legal program; providing business feedback on customer needs across security, privacy, data usage, and AI matters; implementing innovative strategies to scale commercial legal support; partnering with GTM, finance, deal desk, IT, security, and procurement teams; collaborating with Legal Ops to increase automation and data analytics; creating policies, training, and playbooks aligned with risk tolerance; and managing team organizational planning and budgeting. You will support a global team with regular travel to ensure effective operations. The role is based in Okta's downtown San Francisco office, though candidates outside San Francisco with willingness to travel will be considered. Required qualifications: 15+ years as a practicing attorney negotiating and drafting enterprise-level SaaS agreements, with 7+ years of in-house experience and proven track record building and managing legal teams. You must demonstrate ability to translate complex legal issues into clear guidance, communicate effectively with non-legal colleagues, and lead teams delivering practical, scalable results. Experience with deal structures for regulated entities and foreign jurisdictions is essential. You should have built and scaled teams at a publicly traded company, possess strong executive presence, and maintain excellent written and verbal communication skills.
