Goodfire is a research company using interpretability to understand, learn from, and design AI systems. The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco with a team of world-class interpretability researchers and engineers from organizations like OpenAI and DeepMind, backed by over $200M from B Capital, Menlo Ventures, Lightspeed, Eric Schmidt, and others.
You will be Goodfire's first in-house lawyer, building the legal foundation of the company from the ground up. This is a broad role where you will own everything under the legal umbrella: contract negotiations, employment agreements, fundraising, board matters, and more. You will be the person who defines the company's approach to interpretability and AI security contracts and regulations.
A critical part of this role is developing strong expertise in AI security and interpretability to inform decisions on licensing, data rights, and regulation—fields that are rapidly changing with minimal established playbooks. You will be leading the way in figuring out how to navigate these emerging areas. You must be comfortable being the only lawyer in the room, handling both high-stakes decisions that define the business and the foundational work that comes with building something from scratch. You will report directly to the CEO.
The company values mission and team first, continuous improvement, ownership and initiative, and action-oriented execution. This is a high-pace, high-intensity environment focused on developing groundbreaking technology on the critical path to ensuring safe and beneficial AI.

- Strong grasp of AI, particularly AI security and interpretability
- Willingness and humility to own anything legal-related yourself, big or small
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building a legal function from scratch
- AI lab or AI/ML product experience: model licensing, training data rights, open-source releases
- Experience working with healthcare or life sciences customers and related regulations
