Vals AI is hiring a Technical Writer to shape how the company communicates critical questions in AI evaluation: which models work, how enterprises should evaluate them, and how the industry should measure progress.
You'll write across three core areas: Vals Smith (their product for evaluating models and agents on real company workflows), public benchmarks and research (independently measuring frontier models across complex domains), and emerging policy/standards conversations around AI evaluation.
Working closely with research, engineering, product, and customer teams, you'll translate technical work into sharp, accessible writing: benchmark reports, product launches, customer stories, model analyses, technical explainers, and occasional policy pieces. You'll develop a distinctive point of view on what matters and help establish Vals as one of the most trusted voices on AI performance.
Key responsibilities:
- Interview customers, researchers, engineers, and technical leaders; turn conversations into strong long-form pieces
- Establish Vals Smith as the leading enterprise evaluation platform through product launches, customer stories, technical case studies, and original analysis
- Ghostwrite and edit for Vals leadership and technical team members
- Help decide what Vals should write about—not just execute against a content calendar
The role demands speed (shipping content the day major models release) and editorial judgment. You'll work in-person in San Francisco with relocation support provided.
Requirements:
- Portfolio of long-form technical writing (published essays, research blog posts, lab posts, or industry reporting)
- Strong technical literacy—able to read research papers, sit in on technical reviews, and produce accurate, sharp writing
- Editorial point of view with opinions on what's interesting; ability to push back on weak takes
- Speed and ability to produce publishable posts in hours, not weeks
- Ability to work in-person in San Francisco
Nice to haves:
- Prior research communications experience at an AI lab or research-led startup
- Technical background (CS, ML, math, sciences) translated into writing (e.g., engineer or PM turned writer)
- Prior writing for top-tier technical publications or engineering blogs
