OpenAI is seeking a Technical Program Manager to drive complex product, platform, and safety initiatives across ChatGPT, API, enterprise, and related deployment environments. This role operates at the intersection of technical strategy and execution, turning safety and product priorities into actionable plans while influencing architectural and operational decisions.
You will partner deeply with engineers, researchers, product managers, and operational teams to enable sensitive or high-impact model deployments, integrate safeguards into cloud and API platforms, prevent violent misuse and other serious harms, and improve detection and enforcement systems. Key responsibilities include shaping technical roadmaps and safeguards priorities, translating product and safety objectives into execution plans, leading cross-functional programs end-to-end from problem definition through launch and iteration, and owning milestones, dependencies, and accountability across engineering, infrastructure, trust and safety, legal, policy, and operations teams.
You will drive the development and rollout of safeguards such as model evaluations, post-training mitigations, classifiers, abuse detection, monitoring, and enforcement workflows. You'll coordinate readiness for sensitive deployments, identify emerging misuse and severe-harm risks, establish meaningful metrics for program delivery and safety effectiveness, and represent customer and developer needs in technical decisions while balancing risk reduction with model usefulness.
The ideal candidate brings a strong track record of delivering high-impact technical programs across product, platform, infrastructure, or machine learning domains. You should have strong technical judgment across distributed systems, cloud deployments, APIs, and production ML systems, and can engage credibly with engineers on system design and implementation tradeoffs. Experience with safety, integrity, or abuse-prevention systems is valuable, as is demonstrated product judgment, program management discipline, and the ability to communicate clearly with engineering teams, executives, and external stakeholders. You should be comfortable owning high-stakes programs requiring executive presence and cross-organizational influence.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.
