LegalZoom Tax Service Delivery is building an in-house 501(c)(3) fulfillment operation and seeking a credentialed tax professional to serve as the technical quality gate and subject-matter expert. This role is 100% onsite in the Austin office.
You will perform technical review of all Form 1023-EZ and Form 1023 applications before filing, serving as the final quality gate before Pay.gov submission. You'll serve as the named representative on client Form 2848 powers of attorney, provide your own CAF number, and countersign powers of attorney documents as required. Act as the primary IRS contact under those powers of attorney, managing examiner calls, inquiry letters, and other IRS correspondence.
Key responsibilities include drafting and submitting responses to IRS inquiries in partnership with clients and internal teams; advising on complex issues escalated by intake and fulfillment teams, including public charity versus private foundation classification, 501(c)(3) versus 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(7) fit, reinstatements, and Form 8940 requests; and owning ongoing technical training for fulfillment agents supporting the 501(c)(3) process.
You will build and maintain checklists, scripts, job aids, and training materials that promote consistent, high-quality work. You'll use Claude and other AI tools to support application drafting, technical review, documentation, and workflow improvement. Partner with Service Delivery leadership on process documentation, quality assurance, operating procedures, and continuous improvement as volume scales. Support escalations and advise Care and Sales teams on accurate, customer-appropriate communication related to 501(c)(3) services.
Required qualifications: active CPA license or IRS Enrolled Agent credential in good standing with authorization to practice before the IRS; active CAF number or immediate eligibility to obtain one; at least six years of combined tax experience with a minimum of three years in each area—hands-on tax resolution and IRS representation (notices, correspondence, examiner interactions) and nonprofit/exempt-organizations tax (Forms 1023, 1023-EZ, and 990); demonstrated ability to work directly and effectively with the IRS; experience training non-credentialed staff on technical tax or compliance processes; strong proficiency with Claude and AI tools; and ability to work full-time onsite from Austin.
