Bedrock Robotics is deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country. The company has raised $350M in two years and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction, with a team including veterans from Waymo, Segment, and Uber Freight. The Systems Engineer, Safety role sits at the intersection of systems engineering and functional safety. You will define and maintain the system-level architecture that enables autonomous construction equipment to operate safely around people and other equipment. This involves decomposing system-level requirements across hardware, software, and mechanical subsystems while ensuring safety analysis and requirements are integrated from the start rather than added afterward. Key responsibilities include: - Developing actionable requirements and metrics with a focus on safety - Supporting development of functional safety concepts and technical safety concepts - Defining and maintaining system-level architecture and interface requirements across disciplines - Leading or contributing to safety analyses (HARA, FMEA, STPA, FTA) and translating findings into requirements - Defining safety mechanisms such as redundancy, diagnostics, watchdogs, and graceful degradation - Participating in design reviews across hardware, software, and mechanical teams - Working with V&V leads to establish verification and validation plans - Supporting root cause analysis for field and test issues with system-level or safety-relevant causes Required qualifications: - 8+ years of systems engineering experience with direct involvement in functional safety work products (ISO 13849, ISO 26262, IEC 61508) - Strong data-driven approach to system understanding and feature prioritization - Experience with verification and validation methods - Experience with safety analysis and risk assessment methods - Ability to write and decompose system-level requirements and trace them through verification - Familiarity with safety mechanisms (redundancy, watchdogs, diagnostics, fault detection) - Bachelor's or advanced degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field - Ability to work across hardware, software, and mechanical teams with clear technical communication Preferred qualifications include experience with autonomous or robotic systems in unstructured environments, STPA, third-party safety assessment (TÜV, UL), sensing and compute hardware for autonomy (cameras, lidar, GNSS, IMUs), and heavy equipment or construction machinery.
