Cloudflare is seeking a Systems Engineer to join its Network Protocols & Distributed Systems team. You'll work on high-performance infrastructure that handles a quarter of the Internet's traffic, building and operating systems that terminate HTTP and TLS at Internet scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and operating systems that handle HTTP and TLS termination at Internet scale
- Migrating core infrastructure from NGINX to a next-generation Rust-based proxy
- Measuring and improving protocol performance across real-world traffic patterns
- Contributing to open source projects and industry standards (QUIC, MASQUE, ECH)
- Collaborating with IETF and leading engineers in the networking space
You should have solid systems programming experience in Rust, C, or similar languages. While deep expertise in HTTP or cryptography isn't required, you should thrive in complex technical domains, enjoy learning deeply, and be motivated by building reliable, secure, and performant software. The role offers meaningful technical challenges, flexible work hours, take-what-you-need vacation, RSUs, and ESPP.
The position is hybrid, with offices in London, Lisbon, or Austin. For Portugal-based hires, the estimated annual salary is €54,000–€75,000, with compensation adjusted based on work location. The role is eligible for Cloudflare's equity plan and comprehensive benefits including health insurance, retirement savings, and flexible paid time off.
