Form Energy is hiring an early-career Battery Engineer (I or II) to join the Anode Design and Performance Team in Somerville, MA. This hands-on, lab-based role focuses on understanding, designing, and validating Form Energy's iron negative electrode (anode) for long-duration energy storage systems.
You will report to a Staff Battery Engineer and take on responsibilities including: executing and interpreting electrochemical tests on iron electrodes and cells in lab and large-scale test vehicles; preparing and characterizing electrode samples using techniques like SEM, EDS, BET, XRD, and PSA; supporting electrochemical testing by writing test protocols, troubleshooting failures, and maintaining cells; wrangling and organizing test data to identify trends and enable data-driven decisions; and building technical foundation in Form's anode technology while contributing to team problem-solving.
This is an excellent first or early-career industry role with daily mentorship from senior engineers. You'll grow from supported execution early on to increasing independence as you develop expertise. The role emphasizes safety in all lab work, from setup through teardown and post-test investigation.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field; 0–3 years of experience in electrochemistry, battery testing, or materials characterization (internships, co-ops, academic research count); foundational understanding of electrochemistry and/or materials science with hands-on lab aptitude. For Engineer II level: hands-on experience running electrochemical tests or materials characterization, plus some experience with aqueous battery systems (full cells or flow cells).
Desired skills: comfort handling and analyzing data; familiarity with Python, JMP, or similar scripting/statistical tools; SQL fundamentals and database querying; strong attention to detail, organizational and communication skills; growth mindset and preference for experiential learning; ability to take direction and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
