Cape is America's privacy-first mobile carrier, founded in 2022 with a mission to build secure cellular infrastructure from the ground up. Unlike legacy carriers, Cape operates its own private 5G networks designed with privacy and security as core principles, serving consumers, businesses, and government agencies.
You will own the architecture and implementation of an edge data distribution system for private 5G networks that operate disconnected for weeks at a time. The core technical challenge is synchronizing subscriber state from the cloud to edge nodes reliably, securely, and efficiently—ensuring data arrives exactly where it needs to be even when nodes are offline, potentially compromised, or unreachable over uncontrolled links.
As a manager and hands-on technical leader, you will:
- Define the architecture, consistency semantics, conflict-resolution model, and trust boundaries for the change propagation pipeline. You are accountable for the system's guarantees when nodes return after extended offline periods with divergent state.
- Lead a team of distributed systems engineers while rolling up your sleeves to build the hardest parts yourself. Set technical standards, recruit strong talent, and create space for people to do excellent work.
- Own the technical roadmap and prioritization, balancing immediate customer needs with foundational investments that unlock future capabilities.
- Partner cross-functionally with product, field engineers, and customers. Translate operational constraints into technical requirements, educate stakeholders on design tradeoffs, and ship solutions iteratively in real customer environments.
- Build systems that remain functional and consistent offline, operate securely in contested environments where edge nodes cannot be inherently trusted, and scale core telephony services providing data connectivity.
You bring deep distributed systems production experience with real understanding of replication, consistency, and partition failure modes. You have hands-on expertise with event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS, MQTT, RabbitMQ, Flink, Spark) and delivery semantics. You've worked in high-stakes environments where data loss is unacceptable and can reason clearly about correctness-vs-speed tradeoffs. You have a track record leading engineers and setting technical direction.
