Monzo is a fintech company on a mission to make money work for everyone, transforming traditional banking through digital innovation. The company has grown from a prepaid card to offering personal and business bank accounts, joint accounts, credit cards, savings, investments, and pensions in the UK, with expansion into new markets including Spain.
As Strategy & Commercial Manager based in Madrid, you will play a pivotal role in Monzo's international expansion, sitting at the intersection of strategy, commercial planning, and execution. You'll work closely with the Spain General Manager and country team as a strategic and commercial thought partner, taking ownership of complex, ambiguous business problems and translating them into actionable insights and recommendations.
Key responsibilities include:
• Own the end-to-end view of country performance, tracking the full customer journey from acquisition and sign-up through activation, engagement, satisfaction, retention, and profitability across Personal and Business Banking segments.
• Build market and competitor intelligence by developing deep understanding of the Spanish banking landscape, including competitor propositions, pricing, incentives, customer trends, and regulatory developments. Translate external market movements into commercial insights and growth opportunities.
• Build data-driven commercial business cases for opportunities, partnerships, incentives, and strategic initiatives, bringing together financial, customer, and market inputs to support investment and prioritization decisions.
• Anticipate risks, incidents, and second-order effects by identifying issues early, understanding root causes, and assessing business impact over time.
• Act as strategic and commercial partner to the Spain GM and country team, bringing together performance insights, market intelligence, and recommendations to support key decisions and cross-functional initiatives.
You'll bring together insights and expertise from Product, Data, Research, Finance, Marketing, Operations, and other teams to build a holistic view of the business and identify what matters most for success in Spain.
The role offers a hybrid working model with 2-3 days per week in the Madrid office, flexible working hours, €1,200 annual learning budget, and comprehensive wellbeing benefits including financial education, health support, and mental health services.
Requirements:
• Experience in management consulting, investment banking, commercial strategy, business operations, or financial services, ideally with exposure to high-growth or international businesses.
• Highly analytical and commercially minded with strong problem-solving, financial modeling, and data analysis skills; ability to translate complex information into practical commercial recommendations.
• Comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous problems, independently structuring questions, identifying priorities, and driving work from analysis through to clear decisions and action.
• Strong commercial judgment connecting customer needs, market dynamics, business performance, and financial outcomes to identify opportunities and make informed trade-offs.
• Excellent communicator and collaborative business partner, comfortable influencing senior stakeholders and working across functions.
• Strong understanding of banking products, payments, local banking infrastructure, and financial services economics, ideally within Spain or wider European market.
• Proactive, curious, and comfortable in fast-moving environments, balancing strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
• Humble, quick to learn, and excited by the opportunity to help build and scale Monzo in a new market.
