Anyscale is building the commercial platform around Ray, an open-source distributed computing framework used by OpenAI, Uber, Spotify, Instacart, Cruise, and others to power AI workloads at scale. The Ray Data team develops the core distributed data processing engine that underpins modern AI applications, from training to inference.
In this Staff Software Engineer role, you will own the design and optimization of Ray Data's core systems, focusing on performance, scalability, and reliability. You'll architect distributed execution across heterogeneous environments, build data loading and processing solutions for production workloads, and solve complex problems in scheduling, resource management, fault tolerance, and performance optimization. You'll make system-level architectural decisions, reason through fundamental tradeoffs (batch vs. streaming, consistency vs. availability, static vs. dynamic resource allocation), and work directly with customers and AI-native companies to understand and solve their scaling challenges.
You'll need 6+ years building production-grade software, infrastructure, or developer-facing systems with strong Python expertise. Critically, you should have 6+ years of experience personally owning core architectural decisions within a distributed data or compute engine—not primarily operating or using platforms others designed. Deep knowledge of distributed systems internals (scheduling, fault tolerance, data partitioning, distributed execution, performance optimization, database/query engine internals) is essential. You should have a track record of reasoning through system-level tradeoffs and defending architectural decisions, plus genuine passion for solving unsolved problems in large-scale AI infrastructure.
