Axion Ray is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead backend architecture and data systems for an AI-powered manufacturing quality intelligence platform. Founded in 2021 and backed by Bessemer Venture Partners, Amplo, Boeing, and RTX Ventures, Axion serves industrial, aerospace, consumer, and medtech manufacturers.
In this role, you will design and build scalable backend services and data-processing workflows that transform complex, unstructured customer data into reliable, structured outputs. You'll own the architecture of APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and LLM-powered agentic systems while improving reliability, observability, and performance. Working across engineering, product, and customer-facing teams, you'll translate ambiguous business requirements into clear technical direction and lead foundational architectural decisions that scale with the company.
Key responsibilities include designing and evolving AI-powered systems for data movement, transformation, and enrichment; partnering with product and engineering teams to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions; owning reliability and delivery of cloud-native services including deployment, observability, and production support; and mentoring engineers while leading cross-team technical initiatives.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend or data-intensive systems; strong knowledge of data warehousing concepts; experience designing distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, and reliable data-processing services; and experience deploying and operating containerized applications on major cloud platforms.
Bonus qualifications include production LLM systems experience (multi-step, tool-using, or agentic workflows), experience at growing companies, and specific expertise with GCP and Datadog.
