Dune Analytics is a collaborative multi-chain blockchain analytics platform used by thousands of developers, analysts, and investors to understand on-chain data and decentralized finance. The Data Foundation team owns how blockchain data enters Dune, how it is represented, and how it is delivered externally. As Staff Software Engineer - Data, you will architect and build large-scale distributed data systems that ingest, process, and serve blockchain data to thousands of users.
Key responsibilities include: translating ambiguous product requirements into technical specifications by modeling domains, defining interfaces, and navigating trade-offs; breaking down large problems into scoped work for other engineers while building the most complex components yourself; driving high-impact architectural decisions across the data platform and owning components end-to-end from design through production; working across a polyglot stack (Go, Kotlin, Rust, Python) and selecting the right tool for each problem; designing for correctness and performance under real-world volume including large-scale ingestion, distributed processing, and data lake storage; raising the bar on design reviews, testing, and work decomposition; and mentoring engineers by example in a fully distributed environment.
Ideal candidates are strong generalists with solid computer science fundamentals who reason from first principles, making assumptions explicit and deriving solutions rather than reaching for familiar patterns. You should have hands-on experience designing and shipping distributed data systems, understanding their contracts, state transitions, invariants, and failure modes. You are comfortable with ambiguity, communicate clearly in writing, and work effectively with AI tools while understanding their limitations. Experience with data lakes (Parquet, Iceberg, Delta Lake) and companies where data is the product is a plus.
