Carwow is one of Europe's largest online car marketplaces, combining technology, media, and automotive expertise. The company grew over 50% last year with nearly £3bn in cars bought on site and £1.8bn listed for sale. In 2024, Carwow acquired Autovia (creators of AutoExpress and Evo magazines), doubling its audience. The company now operates one of the world's largest YouTube channels with nearly 10 million subscribers and over 1.1 billion annual views, sells 1.2 million print magazine copies, and reaches over 350 million people annually through web content.
You will own end-to-end design for a major problem space in the marketplace—buying, selling, or dealer-facing products—from discovery and framing through launch and iteration. This is a senior individual-contributor role with real influence. You'll partner directly with product and engineering leadership, mentor other designers, and set the standard for how design work gets done at Carwow.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own complex, high-impact problem spaces end to end, from ambiguous discovery through shipped, measured outcomes
- Prototype at pace using AI design tools (Claude Design or equivalent), getting testable experiences in front of users and stakeholders early and often
- Work shoulder-to-shoulder with engineers using AI-assisted workflows to close the gap between design intent and shipped product, ideally getting hands-on in code where it speeds things up
- Set direction by identifying opportunities, making the case with evidence, and bringing product and engineering partners with you
- Raise the craft bar across the team through critique, mentorship, and by making your own work an example worth following
- Champion AI-native ways of working by sharing techniques, building reusable prompts and workflows, and helping the wider team level up
- Ground decisions in evidence, combining user research, data, and rapid experimentation
The design team works AI-natively as a core part of the culture. AI fluency is integral to the role—you're expected to be genuinely fluent in AI-assisted design workflows, not just curious. The company expects designers at this level to have rebuilt their workflow around AI and to be dramatically faster and more ambitious as a result.
Success in the first six months means taking ownership of a significant problem space, shipping work that measurably moves a core metric, and becoming someone other designers seek out for both craft quality and AI tool expertise.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of product design experience with a track record of leading complex, high-impact work in consumer or marketplace products
- High degree of AI fluency with hands-on, demonstrable experience using Claude Design (or equivalent AI design/prototyping tool) as a core part of your workflow—this is critical and must be evident in portfolio and interviews
- Strong end-to-end craft: ability to go from fuzzy problem statement to polished, production-ready design
- Comfort with ambiguity and pace; ability to make good decisions with incomplete information and iterate quickly
- Excellent communication and influence; ability to align senior stakeholders, tell compelling stories with your work, and hold your ground constructively
- Experience mentoring designers and lifting the standard of a team
STRONGLY PREFERRED:
- Experience with Claude Code (or equivalent AI coding agent) to prototype in real code, collaborate deeply with engineers, or ship small changes
- Marketplace, e-commerce, or two-sided platform experience
- Familiarity with experimentation-driven product development (A/B testing, funnel analysis)
