Muon Space seeks a Staff Mission Lead Systems Engineer to join the Mission Execution team. This is a pivotal technical leadership role spanning the full lifecycle of space mission design and operations. The engineer will partner with the Mission Architecture team during early mission formulation and study phases, shaping technical concepts, driving architecture trades, and developing requirements baselines for prospective missions. When a mission advances to implementation, the engineer becomes the Mission Lead Systems Engineer, owning end-to-end technical success from concept through on-orbit operations.
Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining mission-level system models (architecture, requirements, interfaces, behavior); serving as the ultimate technical authority for designated missions; leading cross-functional technical trades and decisions; translating customer objectives into clear, verifiable requirements; managing requirements traceability and verification; defining mission CONOPS and managing subsystem budgets (power, data, mass, pointing/stability); identifying and mitigating mission risks; coordinating design changes across disciplines; leading design, test readiness, and flight readiness reviews; monitoring on-orbit spacecraft and data pipelines; and fostering collaboration with systems, hardware, software, data, ground segment, and operations teams.
The role requires a "big-picture" view of mission execution and serves as the primary technical interface with customers and cross-functional team leads. Success depends on the ability to right-size analysis and processes for different system maturity levels, flexibility with changing demands and schedules, and effective communication of technical content to diverse audiences. The position is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in Mountain View, CA.
Required qualifications include a B.S. or higher in engineering with 10+ years in complex system, mission architecture, and/or spacecraft design for high-rigor government and commercial customers; demonstrated experience as a technical lead (Chief Engineer, Lead Systems Engineer) on at least one complex system design for USG, DoD, or IC customers; experience with major space programs; familiarity with USG/IC acquisition programs and space systems development standards; understanding of USG/IC contracts and artifacts; and experience supporting government proposal development.
