Kraken, a leading cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2011 and trusted by over 10 million users globally, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Pro team's backend trading services division. The Pro team owns critical infrastructure including the matching engine, market data gateways, internal and external APIs, and trading services, operating with a globally distributed team using Rust and agile methodologies.
In this role, you will design and implement robust Rust services and libraries powering trading, payments, and crypto experiences with emphasis on reliability, performance, and user impact. You'll write reusable, testable, and highly efficient code that scales across teams and supports revenue-critical systems without compromising safety or security. Your work will involve collaborating on large-scale distributed systems architecture, translating evolving product requirements into resilient, low-latency solutions.
You'll work alongside hundreds of experienced Rust engineers in a high-performance, product-driven engineering culture. Key responsibilities include autonomously debugging issues across the stack (OS, network, application), applying solid understanding of distributed systems and technologies including RPC protocols, Kafka, and Event-Driven Systems to design scalable solutions. You'll collaborate with product teams to gather requirements and constraints, take complete end-to-end ownership of systems and libraries, and provide mentorship to other engineers while contributing to defining technical culture.
Required qualifications: 7+ years of software engineering experience, experience building financial trading-focused products, proficiency in writing network services or asynchronous code in Rust, security-first mindset during system design, ability to autonomously debug across the stack, and solid understanding of distributed systems. You should demonstrate strong collaboration skills with product teams and a commitment to mentoring peers.
