CesiumAstro is seeking a Principal Spacecraft Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical engineering team responsible for developing advanced communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms.
In this role, you will lead a team of mechanical engineers through all phases of spacecraft development, from concept through on-orbit operations. You will serve as the responsible mechanical authority, overseeing the design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support of novel satellite systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and mentoring a team of mechanical engineers
- Developing robust mechanical designs across all spacecraft subsystems and interfaces
- Managing requirements definition, architecture trades, block diagrams, and detailed analysis
- Overseeing mechanical design, electronics packaging, CAD, mechanical interfaces, thermal architecture, and deployable/actuated structures
- Ensuring environmental qualification and flight readiness of spacecraft
- Collaborating with GNC, EPS, CDH, Payload, RF, Systems, and AI&T teams
- Presenting engineering design review materials to customers and executive leadership
- Participating in proposal-writing efforts
The ideal candidate will be versatile and proficient in spacecraft mechanical design, with expertise in thermal architecture, deployable structures, and environmental qualification. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as you will interact with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
This is a hands-on role in a dynamic startup environment focused on developing cutting-edge space hardware. U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status is required due to export control regulations.
